Etymology[]
The nodachi (or ōdachi), is a type of Japanese katana that is 5-6 foot long (1.5-1.8m). It is so long that it was either carried into battle slung across the owner's back, or it was carried by an attendant. They were not typically seen on the battlefield as their length made them unsuitable for close-quarters combat. Instead, they are commonly believed to have been used while on horseback, as the blade length would allow them to take down infantry without risk of being pulled off their mount.
